Quilty catch-up and other stuff …

Despite the traumas that April threw our way, I did manage to complete a few quilts, before the storm surge hit us …

Way, way back (over a month ago) in March (it seems like years ago), I pieced pretty patchwork tops whilst on holiday in Cornwall. Happy days, happy patchwork.  Gently, during the first Spring days of April, I quilted.  As Himself approached major surgery, I sat quietly and hand-stitched bindings – listening, reassuring and worrying.

As ever, when traumas strike, my reaction is to shut down and shut out.  I gather those I love the most to me, like a comfort blanket and together we watched and waited, worried and hoped.  As the rest of the world spun past, I sought the calm and comfort of my favourite place on the sofa, collies at my feet; with our children, all adults now, talking and listening, visiting and supporting.  Major surgery was cancelled with minutes to go – cardiac consultants summoned.

Between constant visits to his hospital bedside in an acute assessment unit, I couldn’t even enjoy the latest bundles of fabric as they were delivered through the door.  Broken nights and daily routines, inability to concentrate or think about food – stress is debilitating. I know I’m not alone – I have a friend who’s life is traumatic and she’s facing a great loss in her life – we did our best to talk it all through together.

We’ve been unbelievably lucky.  He’s home – again.  In 2010, it was never a possibility that was discussed with me as he lay in an intensive care bed.  Never before have I counted my blessings as often as in the last few years.

Next week – I’m going to concentrate on relaxing-BIG-TIME this weekend – I’ll be back in my sewing room with a VERY exciting commission to work on – big commission – 4 quilts!  But, I’ll look back on the April storms and feel happy that a few more quilts were completed – and here they are:

Breakfast at Tiffany’s ::

Little Homes ::

 Teddy Bear Quilt ::

 Foxtrot ::

Enjoy the weekend and all this wonderful sunshine.  It’s the May Day Bank Holiday here in the UK on Monday.  May Day celebrations were suspended here and J’s birthday will be properly toasted in a few weeks when – hopefully – we’re all feeling fine and dandy!

Thank you for sharing – it’s cathartic to look back, remember the worry and at last photograph quilts.
