A whole year …

22/10/2015 § 5 Comments

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we are still
Call me by my own familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way you always used
Put no difference into your tone
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed
At the little jokes we always enjoyed together
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
Without the ghost of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever was
There is absolute unbroken continuity
What is death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind
Because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you for an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner
All is well.

Canon Henry Scott-Holland, Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral (1847 – 1918)

A whole year

This is such a sad anniversary for you and your family. Thinking of you all, and hoping that this next year will be easier. I admire what you have managed to do and change in the last year. Remember that when someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. Sending you hugs. Sarah x

Your memories are precious, keep them safe, but keep going girl, carry on creating quilts and enjoy all the small things in life. He will always be in your heart. Thinking of you.

I don’t usually comment but really enjoy reading your posts. This evening just wanted to say that I am thinking of you around this anniversary time… it’s not easy when these anniversaries come round and I send you a hug. I have to say that I don’t much like some of Henry Scott Holland’s poem / reflection. Death seems to me not “nothing at all” nor merely a “negligible accident” – it is unfortunately all too stark a reality that defines not just our own lives but that of those we love. On the other hand I do like Scott Holland’s concept of those we love who have died being somehow still close to us and the importance of keeping memories alive through the telling of stories and familiar reference to name. I guess, some you win, Canon Scott Holland…! Take care Adaliza – wishing you peace and that your memories may be sources of joy. Elizabeth x
