This tutorial is designed to support Adaliza’s Charming Squares Quilt Kit.
Check your ingredients ::
Standard stuff :: Make sure you’ve read the seam widths and pressing instructions on the Instruction Sheet. Always check your machine is stitching 1/4″ seams.
The following photos follow the bullet-pointed instructions that are included with your Quilt Kit.
Choose either method to stitch 1/4″ diagonal seams ::
1 Draw a diagonal line on the light fabric and stitch seams on either side.
2 Place 1/2″ washi tape on your sewing machine, lining up the needle with the middle of the tape then stitch with the corners lined up with the side of the tape. The middle photo shows how this works as it has the diagonal line marked in too. (There’s definitely no need to draw the line AND use washi tape)!
Cut between the stitching lines
Press seam ‘to the dark side’ – (the darker fabric) and trim each square to 4 1/2″
Lay out the patches in groups of 4 to make 9 blocks. You may choose a pinwheel pattern or maybe put the lighter triangles into the centre of each block.
When you have completed 9 blocks, lay them out again to check the pattern and then add sashing – vertically between blocks and then horizontally between rows.
Add the first border. Stitch border fabric to sides of patchwork first, then add top and bottom borders. Press.
Add 2nd border using the same method.
Lay out backing fabric, right side down. Lay wadding on top, smoothing out carefully. Then lay patchwork on top, right side up. This makes your quilt sandwich, ready to be pinned. You may use a basting spray if you choose.
Quilt in your preferred pattern then add the binding and hand stitch to the back of the quilt.
There are fully illustrated instructions for quilting and binding at the end of this tutorial. (See pages 5, 6 and 7 instructions).
