Layer Cake Quilt – short tutorial

Hi – here’s a quick and easy way to make a quilt from a Layer Cake.  Layer Cakes are originally from Moda and are made up of 42 x 10″ squares.  Some other fabric houses sell similar but have to call them something different, for example, Lewis & Irene call them Scrumptious Squares.

In no particular order, I cut out 4 squares at a time – 2.25″ from each edge …

Then I collated the small corner squares and sides and decided what went well with each corner block.  It was an easy method to try different fabrics up to see what works although as this is a really busy collection of fabrics, I didn’t fret too much as the patchwork was going to be really colourful whatever I chose …

Next, I put them together in blocks (centre square, 4 x sides and 4 x corner squares) and did some speed piecing …

Hey presto – blocks made.  I didn’t bother trimming them as they were all fairly accurate to within 1/4″ seam allowance but if yours are a bit ‘out’ then straighten up those edges.

I laid the quilt out and took a photo to make sure I had a good balance of colours throughout the quilt, stitched them up in rows and then joined the rows together.

I added a 4″ border to tie it all together and there it is.

Photo of finished quilt to be added just as soon as it’s finished!
