America’s Glorious Quilts …

Look what I found on my bookshelf last night …

I always write my name in my books and the date, and sometimes who gave them to me.  This arrived down the Christmas chimney in 1995 and I’d completely forgotten about it as the spine was inexplicably facing inwards!.

Ooooh it was delicious – the house was asleep, I’d stayed up to catch the end of a film – and then I stayed up a bit longer, savouring the peace and the pictures …

The book is divided into chapters – traditions, folklore, baby quilts, contemporary quilts, hawaiian and amish quilts all have their own – so many examples and such interesting information!  Just look at the colours in the Amish quilts …

My favourite chapter last night was this one …

Tiny quilts to wrap around babies or tuck up dollies, safe in their little cribs.  Some baby quilts were made with love for a newborn, by family or friends whilst others have wobbly first stitches from tiny fingers as little girls copied their mothers and learned to quilt themselves.

There are so many beautiful pictures in this 300+ page book, featuring quilts from the 1800’s to the contemporary quilts of the 1980’s. It was printed by Beaux Arts: ISBN 0-88363-308-6.

However did I manage to forget this gem? I’ll share some more of my favourite photos with you over the next few posts.

I only managed to squeeze in 20 minutes quilting this evening.  Meadowsweet is coming along, but I need a couple of hours to finish the quilting and attach the binding.  Then all I need is a good film – a very good, very long film to watch, while I stitch all around the binding edge -maybe tomorrow night!

Oh – I almost forgot (this is fast becoming my catch-phrase) – worrying – this is my 150th post, just a few days after my blog’s first birthday!  Can hardly believe it!

Hope you’ve enjoyed joining me on my jaunts around the countryside, the quilts and cushions, craft fairs and village fetes; favourite shops and hidden gems; the birds and the beasties who regularly feature here …

Having a sit down with Flora when she was a little duck!

Ah, that’s what I need – a little sit down!
